Marilena Romeo

Hats can provide instant elegance and sophistication. These amazing hats are by milliner extraordinaire, Marilena Romeo. A  Melbourne local, Marilena shot to the heights of the millinery world in 1992, when three of her hats came in the top 10 at the “Le Grand Prix of Hats (the outstanding Millinery Design Award). Since then Marilena has continued to make her elegant creations and was awarded the best hat at the Dubai World Cup Millinery Award in 2007.

Marilena creates “ready to wear” hats that can be purchased through her website and stockists and also offers a custom couture service for women lucky enough to afford it.

You know, I like hats, but I have to say how many people would really purchase one of these and wear it. I think they must be the avant-garde of the hat industry. The red one is probably the one I see most adaptable to the mainstream. Am I wrong?

Oh, I totally agree. These are definitely not everyday wear. In Australia though, the racing carnivals (horse races) are a big deal. Every year the whole country practically stops to watch the Melbourne Cup - people have lunches at work and parties etc. And hats are huge part of the racing carnivals. Ladies always wear fancy hats to the races and race luncheons. I would love to wear any of those hats to the races (but I wouldn't have the confidence to wear them any other time)!
