Earth Hour

Earthhour

I almost forgot, show your support for the fight against global warming by taking part in Earth Hour and you'll be beautiful like Natalie Imbruglia. Well, maybe not but its still worth doing.

"On March 31 2007, for one hour, Sydney made a powerful statement about the greatest contributor to global warming – coal-fired electricity – by turning off its lights. Over 2.2 million Sydney residents and over 2,100 businesses switched off, leading to a 10.2% energy reduction across the city. What began as one city taking a stand against global warming caught the attention of the world. In 2008, 24 global cities will participate in Earth Hour."

All you need to do is switch your lights off for an hour at 8pm on Saturday 29th March 2008. For further details check out the Earth Hour website.

Happy Birthday Chloe!

Today is my precious daughter's 1st birthday. No posts today, I've got to make a pink and purple ladybug birthday cake for tomorrow's party. Here's Chloe with the Care Bear we gave her this morning. She loves it.

Are you a Harajuku Lover?

When I was in Sydney this month I spotted some cute Harajuku Lovers hightop sneakers. However, upon looking at the complete Harajuku Lovers collection online, I'm unsure whether I really am a lover. This is my pick from the Harajuku Lovers website:
Harajukulovers
Perhaps they're not that bad, maybe I'm just not as into kawaii as I thought. I was expecting to love everything in the range. I still like the shoes though:
Harajukulovers_shoes

And, if you go to HP's website you can make your own Harajuku Lovers paper doll and kawaii greeting cards. Here's me, harajuku-style:
Harajuku_doll
I really do love Harajuku (and all of Tokyo for that matter) but I think I'm a little more selective about loving Gwen's version.

Secondhand Goodness

When I was about 15, my best friend Deborah and I would spend Saturdays at local charity shops raking through mothballed coats and geriatric cardigans in search of vintage treasures.  We were often very successful. My most prized find was a pair of genuine vintage, black suede knee-high boots which cost only $2.50. Happily, Deborah and I each found black velvet jackets and cream ruffle-front blouses so there wasn't any vintage-envy.

Of course, its not 1990 anymore and scratching through other peoples' cast offs is no longer necessary, other people do it for you. These days, I prefer my clothes to be new but if I were looking for a little vintage something I'd turn to these super-professional ebay stores.

Ebay_vintage1

Clockwise from Top Left: Metallic Purple Prom Dress (starting bid US$14.99) from Sourpuss Vintage;  Burgundy Leather Jacket (Buy it Now price US$68) from Bleubird Vintage; Red Stripe Tuxedo Minidress (Buy it Now price US$39.99) from Sick Thrift;  Metallic Lame Blouse (current bid US$9.99) and Black Leather Highwaist Skirt (starting bid US$9.99) both from Sick Thrift.

Ebay_vintage2

Clockwise from Top Left: Green Mini Dress (current bid US$16) from Nova Vintage; Hot Pink Mexican Dress (current bid US$15.50) from Sick Thrift; Yellow Lace Mini Dress (current bid US$16) from Nova Vintage; Orange Mini Dress (starting bid $14.99) from Sourpuss Vintage; Green Ruffle Mini Dress (current bid US$14.50) from Nova Vintage; Floral Sun Dress (current bid US$16.05) from Sourpuss Vintage.

Of course these dresses will only last a limited time so check out the ebay sellers for more secondhand goodness: Sourpuss Vintage, Bleubird Vintage, Sick Thrift, Nova Vintage. Also worth a look are Lotus Vintage and Vintage Voguess.  Sadly, I think the days of $2.50 boots are gone.

Thanks!

4. One end of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (view from boat).

Decorative Country Living

Decorativecountryliving

Decorative Country Living is a delightful store in the UK selling antiques and vintage (and vintage-inspired) goodies. From homewares, furniture, accessories and children's toys to things for the garden, everything is so pretty. If you live outside the UK the site is still worth a look even just for inspiration. Makes me want to  put on a frilly apron and bake some scones.

New Prints from Art Princesses

You have to be quick to get prints from these ladies.  Audrey Kawasaki's Lacey Print went on sale on the weekend and sold out in 24 hours.

Audreykawasaki_lacey

And my favourite artist, Stella Im Hultberg has some prints available soon which I'm sure will sell just as quickly. Thankfully, I have some prints of her earlier work. But I know from experience, the bitter disappointment of missing out on ones that you really, really love. This is one of Stella's prints I was lucky enough to get, 'Always'.

Stellaimhultberg_always

Imagine how exciting it would be to have an original piece.

The best way to find out about new prints is to go to the artist's website or blog and sign up to their mailing list. That way you'll at least get a couple of days to be ready to buy. Its almost as nerve racking as trying to get concert tickets.

Check out Audrey Kawaski's website and Stella Im Hultberg's blog for more details.

I'm back!

Hello! I'm back from Sydney and might I say that my suitcase was a little heavier on the way home... with my trophy for Best Accessory Collection - Debut Sydney 2008!!!!

Ok, the shoes and clothes I bought in Sydney may also have had something to do with it, but I'm going to revel in winning for just a little while longer. I'm not a very competitive person so winning doesn't happen very often. I think the last time I won something was in my final year of high school. I won a prize for Best Legal Studies Assignment. Before that... nothing.

Runway1

Thank you to everyone who posted comments and sent emails wishing me luck. I met heaps of cool people at Fashion Exposed so I'll be sharing some gorgeous fashion labels with you over the next few weeks. Oh, and I'll take some pictures of the shoes I bought.

Painter Girl - Gemma Jones

Ooohhh! I just discovered some gorgeous retro art by Gemma Jones (via Wee Birdy).

Gemmajones

I immediately bought the top 2 prints for my daughter's room. I would have liked to buy a third (because I think things look good hung in threes) but I couldn't decide between the other two.

I was also excited to find out that the artist is an Australian too. Check out Gemma Jones' etsy shop and website for more details.
